Photo Projection Necklace: How the Hidden Photo Actually Works

How a photo projection necklace works: microprint, domed glass lens, three ways to view the hidden image. Honest guide from 65,000+ customers and eight years at Brother & Sisters.

A photo projection necklace looks like a plain steel disk on a delicate chain. The image you put inside it is invisible from a normal viewing distance. That is the whole point of the design.

We have been making these pieces at Brother & Sisters since 2017. Across 65,000+ customers, the same question arrives almost weekly: how does it actually work, and how does the photo not fade? This article answers both.

The microprint and the domed lens

Inside every projection pendant lives a small piece of optical glass shaped like a dome. The base of the dome is roughly the size of a grain of rice. We microprint your photograph at that scale onto a thin transparent disk and seal the disk against the flat back of the lens. The domed top of the lens is then set facing outward in the centre of the pendant or bead.

From a normal viewing distance, the lens reads as a small dark dot. The microprinted image is too small for the naked eye to resolve. Hold the lens close to your eye, however, and the dome acts as a small magnifier: the image fills your visual field. That is the same principle that powers loupes and old slide viewers.

Three ways to see the hidden image

One: the eye-close method. Hold the lens within five to ten centimetres of your eye, with light behind you. The image appears full size. This is the way most owners discover the projection the first time. It works in any room with reasonable ambient light.

Two: the phone camera method. Open the camera on a smartphone. Hold the lens about ten centimetres from the rear camera. Tap to focus on the lens. The image appears sharp on the screen. This is the easiest way to share the hidden photo with someone else without taking the necklace off.

Three: the wall projection method. In a dim room, hold the lens close to a strong directional light source. A small slide-style projection of the image will appear on the opposite wall. This is the most theatrical way to view it and the one that surprises people the most.

What you can put inside

The microprint process handles most photographs reasonably well, including older grainy ones. Our customers most often send: recent candid photos of children, baby portraits taken in the first weeks, scans of older printed family photographs, wedding day candids, and photos of pets. We have also set first ultrasound scans, hand-drawn images by children, signature scans, and even short handwritten notes.

The single hard requirement is that the face or subject must fill at least one third of the original frame. Photographs where the subject is small in a wide scene do not microprint well. A full guide to choosing the right photograph covers this in detail.

How long does the image last

The lens is sealed at the factory using an industrial bonding process. Water, soap, sweat, sun, and daily wear do not reach the print. Customers who bought their first projection piece in 2018 are still wearing them. We have not had a faded lens in eight years of returns.

The housing surrounding the lens is made of 316L stainless steel on the base models, the same grade used in surgical instruments. The gold-plated and rose-gold finishes are slightly more delicate; we recommend taking those off for chlorinated swimming pools, but everyday water exposure is fine.

How to choose a piece

Three product families carry the projection lens. The photo necklaces sit a few centimetres below the collarbone and stay close to the body, the easiest way to wear the projection daily. The photo bracelets live on the wrist and are easier to lift to the eye when you want to view the image. The Steel Photo Bracelet in particular is our highest-volume men's piece and is detailed in our longer write-up on hidden photo bracelets for him.

If you are still deciding between the necklace and the bracelet form, our comparison article walks through the trade-off.

Frequently asked questions

Can the hidden photo fade or get damaged?
No. The microprint is sealed behind a glass lens at the factory. Water, soap, sun, sweat, and daily wear do not reach the image. We have not had a faded lens in eight years of returns.

How small does the photograph have to be?
You send a normal-resolution image (phone photo, scan, anything from 1000 pixels wide and up). We microprint it to roughly the size of a grain of rice. The original file size does not need to be tiny; we handle the resizing.

What if the photo is blurry or old?
Send it anyway. Our microprint process is forgiving with grain and lower resolution; the result still reads as the same person. The only cases we cannot make work are photographs where the subject is too small in the original frame, or covered.

Is the projection visible from across the room?
No. The image is too small to resolve at any normal viewing distance. You see a steel disk or bead. That privacy is the design intent — the photo is for the person wearing the piece, not for the room.

Can I change the photo later?
The lens is sealed at the factory and is not field-replaceable. If you want to add a second photograph, the simplest route is a second piece. Many customers eventually own two: one for the kids today, one for a parent or a pet they have lost.

A closing note

The single most common reaction in the customer emails we get a week after delivery is some version of: I didn't expect it to be this small, and I didn't expect it to feel this private. Both of those reactions are exactly what the design is for. The image is small, the privacy is the point, and the piece works because it carries an anchor that nobody else in the room can read.
